Francis COLLINS,
the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA

Francis S. Collins has focused on the study of human medical genetics after an initial training in organic chemistry and medicine. He has since 1984 developed the techniques which have permitted the rapid cloning of the CFTR (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator) gene.

Lap-Chee Tsui, following early work on bacteriophage lambda, has entered the domain of human genetics in 1984. The collaboration between these two eminent scientists goes back to 1987 and 1989 when they have co-discovered the CFTR gene. By doing so, they have put an end the race towards identification of the gene implicated cystic fibrosis, a race that they had started 7 years earlier.
