The 1995 Prize was awarded to Staffan Normark in the field of Molecular Biology of Human Pathogens. Staffan NORMARK, Professor at the Center for Microbiology and Biology of Tumors, The Karolinksa Institute, Sweden Thanks to original and elegant molecular biology experiments, Staffan Normark has played a major role in the study of bacterial pathogens, and in particular in the understanding of interactions between bacteria and mammalian cells. His most important contributions involve study of antibiotic resistance in bacteria and elucidation of some of the events implicated in bacteria-host cells recognition, via interactions of adhesins and their receptors. |
