Gregory WINTER MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology; Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 2QH; United Kingdom

Michael NEUBERGER MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology; Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 2QH; United Kingdom

Gregory Winter and Michael Neuberger have, each one, brought major contributions to our knowledge of molecular mechanisms of the immune response. Gregory Winter has more particularly distinguished himself by the description of the genetic organization and the DNA sequence of the human VH & VL genes, while Michael Neuberger has chosen to study the structure, the function & the regulation of B cell receptors. It is in large part thanks to these two excellent immunologists that the hopes founded on the therapeutic use of monoclonal antibodies could finally be realized. Thanks to the industrial scale production, human or humanized monoclonal antibodies are usable today in the treatment of certain cancers.
